Background Pollution & Traffic
Street boxes measuring CO concentrations
The aims were to investigate:
- the in street and kerbside pollution levels with increasing distance from the intersection - sites were selected along the central reservation and either side of Marylebone Road between Gloucester Place and Baker Street; some additional sites in DAPPLE 2004 were located away from the main Marylebone Road research area to study conditions in the quieter side streets;
- the vertical gradient of pollution levels either side of Marylebone Road - previously in DAPPLE 2003 this had been investigated in the central reservation;
- how the pollution levels vary with the meteorology - as observed in-street, at roof top and synoptically;
- how the pollution levels vary with the traffic flow.
- NO2 and PM2.5 concentrations at two locations (ground level and roof top at WCC),
- particle size spectra,
- data from the ITS instrumented vehicle within the traffic flow,
- routine data from the Marylebone Road AURN Super-site.and WCC monitoring site, and
- OPSIS data from the WCC monitoring site.
Meteorological mast measurements
A meteorological mast was located in the basement of WCC, at Site 11, outside Room 12 on Marylebone Road to provide infrastructure on which to mount various instruments to obtain a vertical profile. Combination of the street level, WCC roof top and 2 positions on the mast gave 4 point vertical profiles of wind speed, CO2 and Ozone to investigate the vertical variation of pollution with meteorological conditions.
